  • Audi is developing a new A7 with both sedan and wagon body styles
  • The new A7 will debut in early 2025 and likely arrive as a 2026 model in the U.S.
  • Audi is likely to use the PPC platform for the new A7, which supports gas and plug-in hybrid powertrains

The Audi A6 has been turned into an electric vehicle but Audi fans looking for a gas-powered midsize sedan will still have an option in the future.

The automaker is cooking up a new A7 sedan for the segment and a camouflaged prototype has been spotted.

The current A7 is offered exclusively as a liftback, except in China where a stretched A7 sedan is also available. For the next generation, there will be both a sedan and a wagon, and this time the sedan should be offered globally.

Prototypes for the new A7 wagon, a body style Audi calls the Avant, have also been spotted in the recent past.

The first members of the new A7 range are set to debut early next year, Audi confirmed in November. Those members that reach the U.S. should arrive as 2026 models. In addition to the sedan, the wagon should also reach the U.S., though perhaps only in high-performance RS 7 Avant and soft-roader A7 Allroad guises.

Audi hasn’t mentioned specific details for the new A7, but expect the automaker to use Volkswagen Group’s PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) platform designed for premium cars with gas and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The platform made its debut in the new Audi A5.

The prototype for the A7 shows a sportier, more sculpted design than the outgoing A6. A large, protruding grille sits up front, while at the rear are wide, muscular hips that appear to integrate side vents below the taillights. Interestingly, it looks like Audi also plans a return to exposed exhaust tips, though only on one side of the rear fascia in the regular models.

In the cabin, there will likely be digital screens galore, as seen in the latest Audis like the A5 and Q5 as well as the A6 E-Tron and Q6 E-Tron. For anyone with a dislike for touchscreens, AI-backed voice commands will be able to learn the driver’s preferences and manner of speaking for almost any task that normally requires screen input.

The new A7 range will be among the last Audis to feature gas engines as the automaker has confirmed it will only launch electric vehicles after 2026.

Also out testing is a redesigned Q7 midsize SUV which is also expected to offer gas and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
