The 2022 Jeep Renegade sports rugged looks on a small scale, but the off-road ability’s there.
What kind of vehicle is the 2022 Jeep Renegade? What does it compare to?
The Jeep Renegade is the least-expensive model in the off-road brand’s portfolio, a small SUV that squares off against the Subaru Crosstrek, Hyundai Venue, and Honda HR-V, among others.

While not perfect, the Renegade has chunky styling and a broad range of features not always found in an SUV this small. We give it a TCC Rating of 5.7 out of 10, but it would do better if Jeep saw fit to install more crash-avoidance tech. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2022 Jeep Renegade?
The Renegade returns for 2022 with a scaled-down lineup with just four trim levels, three of which come standard with all-wheel drive. All Renegade models make use of a zippy 1.3-liter turbo-4 rated at a healthy 177 hp, which goes to the wheels via an 9-speed automatic transmission.
Though hardly a sporty choice, the Renegade goes down the road with confidence and, in Trailhawk form, boasts some off-roady bits that enhance its capability beyond most class rivals.
Inside, the Renegade is a tight fit, but its interior has an imaginative design with lots of features including an 8.4-inch touchscreen for infotainment that’s loaded up with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus navigation.
How much does the 2022 Jeep Renegade cost?
The scaled-down Renegade range starts at about $24,000 for the base Sport version, which comes standard with automatic emergency braking. The off-roady Trailhawk costs around $30,000, but is curiously not available with that critical safety tech.
Where is the 2022 Jeep Renegade made?
In Italy.
Jeep channels its retro past for the blocky Renegade.
Is the Jeep Renegade a good-looking car?
Credit to Jeep for making a small SUV with gobs of personality. If you like the way it fuses vintage cues such as round headlights and a two-box profile, the Jeep Renegade easily earns its 7 out of 10 score here.
The squared-off wheel arches speak to an off-roady positioning, while Trailhawk versions wear chunky tires and come equipped with bright red tow hooks.
Inside, the Renegade is full of character–at the expense of practicality in some cases. Its busy dash is fun and playful, though controls can be a little tricky to sort out.

By small SUV standards, the Jeep Renegade packs a lot of capability.
Is the Jeep Renegade 4WD?
All but the base Renegade Sport come standard with an all-wheel-drive system.
How fast is the Jeep Renegade?
Last year’s underwhelming base engine is a goner, replaced by a newly standard 1.3-liter turbo-4 rated at 177 hp and 210 lb-ft of torque. The engine offers plenty of grunt but has a complicated relationship with the 9-speed automatic transmission, which can fumble at low speeds.
The Renegade’s all-wheel-drive system offers several traction modes (more on Trailhawks), plus a simulated low range that makes low-speed crawling easy enough. While not a downsized Wrangler, the Renegade sufficiently mountain goat-like for most needs.
On-road, the Renegade has a comfortable ride and good handling with well-weighted steering. Even at highway speeds, it’s quite composed.
Overall, the Renegade rates 5 out of 10 on our scale.

The Jeep Renegade is cramped inside for rear-seat passengers.
Small crossovers are just that: small. This one scores 5 out of 10, a perfectly average score.
The 2022 Renegade is no different, though front-seat riders have decently comfortable thrones with power adjustment available on all but the base Sport version. Rear-seat riders will find limited leg room–just 35.1 inches–and relatively small doors that make climbing aboard a pant-dirtying affair.
Cargo space is fine at around 18.5 cubic feet with the rear seat upright and 51 cubes with it dropped down.
Most versions of the Renegade have nice interior materials paired with an imaginative design.

Most Renegades are loaded with crash-avoidance tech, but test scores lag.
How safe is the Jeep Renegade?
All but the Renegade Trailhawk will do their best to avoid a wreck, which is a good thing since federal testers rate this crossover at an unimpressive four stars overall. At least the IIHS was kinder, with “Good” scores in most tests but not enough to earn a Top Safety Pick award.
On our scale, that’s enough for a 5 out of 10. Jeep can do better: The omission of automatic emergency braking for the off-road flagship version of this lineup is a head-scratcher, though at least the tech is standard across the rest of the range.

The 2022 Jeep Renegade packs a lot of tech into a small SUV package.
Which Jeep Renegade should I buy?
The Renegade lineup comes in four flavors: Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk, and Limited. That’s fewer than in the past, but at least some feature upgrades this year make up for the scaled-down lineup. We rate the range at 8 out of 10 based on standard equipment and plenty of optional extras, as well as good infotainment. There’s not a more comprehensive lineup of small SUVs on the market than this one.
Our money would be on the mid-level Latitude, though even the base Sport comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen with CarPlay and Android Auto, plus navigation and automatic climate control.
The Latitude adsd nicer interior materials, a 7.0-inch screen in the instrument cluster, 17-inch alloy wheels, and tinted windows. For an extra cost, shoppers can add a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and steering wheel, and a few other niceties.
The Trailhawk adds off-road-ready bits including a high-riding suspension and chunky tires, but it deletes automatic emergency braking. Weird.
How much is a fully loaded Jeep Renegade?
A loaded-up Renegade Limited can crest $33,000 with options, though it’s a fairly luxurious small SUV with leather seats, Kenwood audio, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, and 19-inch wheels.
