Renault will reveal the new Scenic E-Tech full-electric compact SUV at the Munich auto show on Sept. 4.
The automaker released camouflaged images of the Scenic, which will be its first electric compact SUV, and a sister model to the Megane E-Tech that was launched last year. Renault said camouflaged pre-production cars will be tested on European roads this summer.
It will be launched in 2024 and built in Douai, northern France. The model continues Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo’s push into the compact and midsize segments to sell more higher-margin cars.
Last year, Renault launched the Austral compact SUV – available with full-hybrid and gasoline drivetrains – which will be followed by two companion models, the Espace midsize SUV and the Rafale midsize coupe SUV, the brand’s new flagship.
The Scenic E-Tech will be a sibling model to the Nissan Ariya, which was launched last year.
The Scenic’s design was previewed last year with the Scenic Vision concept. The concept model used a hybrid battery-hydrogen fuel cell powertrain.
The concept Scenic Vision is 4490 mm long, with a 2835 mm wheelbase, and rides on 21-inch wheels. In comparison, the Austral is 4510 mm long.
It is powered by Renault’s 160-kilowatt electric motor driving the rear wheels; charge comes from a 40-kilowatt-hour battery and a 16-kW fuel cell stack. A small hydrogen tank rides in the front compartment.
The current Scenic and Grand Scenic are classified as minivans, a segment that has nearly disappeared in Europe as buyers increasingly favored SUVs.
