VinFast drops out of Munich auto show

Europe

Vietnamese automaker VinFast has canceled its participation in this year’s IAA Mobility show in Munich.

The company confirmed to Automotive News Europe sister publication Automobilwoche that it will be absent from the show, which takes place next month.

VinFast did not give a reason for the cancellation.

VinFast’s plan to sell cars in Europe has hit setbacks. The company planned to begin deliveries of the VF 9 and VF 8 SUVs last year, but it was unable to complete the homologation process in time.

Its planned market launch in Germany, France and the Netherlands has been slowed by more challenging safety regulations that took effect this year in Europe, Chairwoman Le Thi Thu Thuy said at the Automotive News Europe Congress in June.

VinFast has turned its focus to North America. This month the automaker broke ground on its U.S. assembly plant in North Carolina, where it plans to build three EV crossovers starting in 2025.

Tesla, tech companies taking part

The IAA Mobility show, which is open to the public from Sept. 5-10, first took place in 2021 as the successor to the Frankfurt auto show. The biennial event is organized by the German auto industry association (VDA).

German automakers including Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Opel will be at the show. Tesla and Renault are also taking part, along with Chinese automakers including BYD, Leapmotor and Dongfeng.

Other participants include suppliers Robert Bosch, Continental and ZF Friedrichshafen, as well as tech companies, including Google, Nvidia, Luminar, Qualcomm and Amazon Web Services.
