Included in the charges are numerous street racing and reckless driving violations

On December 12th, emergency services responded to a single-vehicle crash in New South Wales, Australia. Upon arrival, they discovered a 19-year-old driver who had lost control of his car, which was allegedly involved in street racing. During the investigation, police identified 48 moving violations recorded on the youngster’s dashcam .
The teenager involved in the crash, Marcellus Otero, claims that the accident occurred because a woman was pulling out of her driveway. According to reports, when she merged into his lane without realizing how fast he was traveling, Otero attempted to avoid her in his Subaru BRZ. During this maneuver, he allegedly lost control of the vehicle and collided with a pole.
As part of the investigation, the police reviewed video footage from both CCTV cameras and Marcellus Otero’s dashcam. The videos allegedly provided evidence of street racing activities just before the crash. In total, authorities identified 48 different violations, including street racing, reckless driving, and speeding, among others.

After all of the smoke settled, police charged Otero with six counts of street racing, six counts of speeding by more than 45 km/h (27 mph), and six counts of driving recklessly. On top of that, he’s facing 21 counts of driving with a suspended license, five counts of speeding more than 30 km/h (18 mph) and two more counts of speeding more than 20 km/h (12 mph).
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Otero evidently didn’t know that his dashcam was even turned on. “I was like ‘Wow, I’m an actual idiot… It just taught me not to be an idiot anymore,” he said. “I’m thankful for the officers that were there. They taught me a lesson just to drive safer”. Now that he’s officially deprived of a driver’s license, his viewpoint is a little different.
“Now that I’ve lost my license and everything, you just appreciate driving and being close to family and friends,” he said. Let us all appreciate the ability to drive just a touch more after recognizing that it’s not a right, it’s a privilege.
