Porsche 911 GT3 And Mustang Race Each Other, But It’s Not The Ford That Crashes

In a drag race between a Porsche 911 GT3 and a Ford Mustang, the result should be obvious. The Porsche, thanks in part to its potent launch control, should smoke the Ford. Meanwhile, the driver of the Mustang is the one most likely to send it into a wall or a crowd of people. However, this isn’t what happened when a GT3 and a Mustang recently raced each other in Costa Rica.

This wasn’t a polished drag strip but the pit straight of a local track, seemingly part of a larger event that drew all kinds of cars and motorcycles for some casual on-track showdowns. Unfortunately for the Porsche driver, it seems they skipped the “how to launch your car” portion of the owner’s manual.

As the white 911 lines up alongside the bright red Mustang, the unmistakable soundtrack of the car’s high-revving 3.8-liter naturally-aspirated six-cylinder fills the grandstands. Moments later, it pulls away. Bizarrely, the sound of the car bouncing off the rev limiter makes it sound like the launch control was enabled, but it left the line at a snail’s pace, perhaps because the system wasn’t on or because the driver didn’t know what they were doing.

Whatever the case may be, the car spins up its rear wheels and, before long, starts to slide. The driver looks to have overcorrected and ends up slamming into a concrete crash barrier on the side of the track. The force of the impact doesn’t just shock attendees at the event but also trashes the front of the Porsche, leaving it with extensive damage that will be very costly to repair.

Thankfully for everyone involved, the Porsche didn’t veer right into the Mustang, nor did it strike a photographer kneeling precariously on the grass nearby.
