A 23-car pileup occurred on Saturday atop the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland, and investigators believe that the driver of a blue Honda Civic coupe may be responsible. Details of the incident are still emerging, and authorities are seeking more information from the public. Additionally, investigators believe that around 20 additional vehicles were involved in a series of secondary crashes, bringing the total tally to 43 vehicles.
The crash occurred around 8 am on Saturday morning and resulted in 13 people being sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The pileup initially involved 23 cars and blocked all three lanes of traffic on the westbound side of the bridge. Emergency crews had to transport equipment to the injured parties on foot because the bridge was impassable.
The Maryland Transportation Authority Police (MDTA) say that they believe a blue 2018 Honda Civic Coupe might be to blame. They suspect it was “being driven at high speeds and erratically prior to the crash.” They’re also asking that anyone who saw this car around 7:30-7:45 that morning call the MDTA Police at 443-454-8703.

According to the MDTA, 20 other vehicles were involved in a series of secondary accidents on the bridge. This seems to indicate that conditions were poor, and several drivers made various mistakes on the scene. Whether or not this diminishes the responsibility placed on the Civic driver by authorities is yet to be seen. It might take several months until we find out what charges emerge.

The MDTA Police released a statement documenting its process, concluding with “This reconstruction is a detailed process that typically takes months to complete as investigators analyze evidence such as interviews, physical evidence, medical records, and more. Additional information will be released as it becomes available. Any potential charges related to the crash are pending the conclusion of the investigation.”
For now, it’s hopeful that the general public can assist in the investigation. It clarified in its latest post that it has the car and knows who the driver is. Video from the scene appears to show the Honda sitting near the beginning of the accident string as investigators mark its location.
