The Rolls-Royce Starlight Headliner is one of the best gimmicks on the market. Not all that technically impressive, but I defy you to sit under the sparkling roof and not go “ooh” and/or “ahh.”
It should therefore come as no surprise that there are more than a few kits on the market that allow you to give your own vehicle’s roof the same starry treatment. And they aren’t that expensive either. A quick look on eBay found no shortage of kits for around 50 bucks.
The question, then, is whether or not it’s worth it to actually take this project on yourself. Fortunately, YouTube channel SalvageMasterV decided to try and find out.

The kit the host chose had 850 individual fiber-optic threads that can shine in any number of colors, at different speeds, and synchronized to music. As it turns out, the job of installing it all into the Alcantara roof of a BMW X6M wasn’t that hard.
Just because a job isn’t hard, though, doesn’t mean it isn’t tedious. The installation required the YouTuber to jot down 850 marks on the top side of the roof panel to plan the display, drill all of the holes, and then poke every single fiber optic thread through individually.
And he wasn’t even done. He then had to clip each one as close to the headliner as possible and ensure that none of the threads were preventing the headliner from seating with the roof.
The results, though, are pretty impressive. With all due respect to this builder, there are a few areas where you can tell that something is poking through when the room is lit. But when the room is dark and the light display is turned on, the video’s host is clearly thrilled to bits about it.
Guess the time required to drill those 850 holes and then fit each LED individually was worth it after all.
