The English driver who was caught doing over double the speed limit faces a fine of more than $5,000

Earlier this month, the Cannonball 2023 took place in Ireland, but one Lamborghini driver wasn’t able to finish the run with the rest of the supercar convoy after being caught doing more than double the speed limit by Garda Siochana, the national police force.
Garda posted photos of the Huracan in question on their radar speed detector, showing it traveling at an alleged speed of 217 km/h (135 mph) in a 100 km/h (62 mph) zone. They stated that the man behind the wheel, England’s James Wall, was arrested.
Wall was cited for dangerous driving, and was caught in County Mayo on the N17, which runs from County Galway to County Sligo. In its social media post, the police said they “will see them in court.”

And, indeed, they did. The Irish Times reports that evidence of arrest, charge, and caution was given to Wall in court by Garda John Barrett of the Mayo Roads Policing Unit. He claimed that after the arrest, Wall said, “I am sorry. I got caught up in the moment.”
At the end of the hearing, Wall was released after making a €500 ($533 USD at current exchange rates) bail payment. He will be back in court on October 17 for his full hearing. According to Citizen Information, the penalty for dangerous driving in Ireland is a fine of up to €5,000 ($5,329 USD at current exchange rates) or up to six months in prison for a first offense.
Although he was the driver clocked driving the fastest on September 16, Wall wasn’t the only one who was seen exceeding the limit. Per the Garda’s Facebook page, a driver in a black Lamborghini Huracan STO was caught driving at 159 km/h (99 mph) in a 100 km/h (62 mph) zone on that same day. The consequences of that driver’s actions have not been made clear.
