Mercedes-AMG GT-R Sinks In Dutch Canal After Botched Overtake

Water and supercars don’t often mix very well, and that typically becomes more and more true as the amount of water in the situation increases. In a recent incident involving Mercedes-AMG GT-R, water very likely just took the German supercar out for good. Video from the scene shows the crashed coupe almost completely submerged in a canal as workers try to free it.

The accident allegedly happened in Beek en Donk, a town in North Brabant, Netherlands. A rural area, Beek en Donk is roughly an hour from Amsterdam and one of its main features is a lengthy canal next to a road named Bosscheweg. Like the canal, the road itself is arrow straight.

According to local reports, the Mercedes driver was in the midst of an overtaking maneuver when they lost control. Sadly, the driver couldn’t keep the car on the road and it ended up leaving the blacktop before it hit the water. Two occupants allegedly escaped the vehicle without injury.

That’s great news because the video from the scene shows the AMG sunken so deep that only its rear hatch and spoiler are visible above the water. Other photos from the scene show the vehicle once recovery crews managed to pull it out of the canal. The cabin is soaked, there are plants from the canal in it, and the front passenger side of the front bumper is damaged.

Interestingly, it appears as though the exterior damage is largely limited to that single corner. The condition looks really good externally. The big question with this car as it almost always is with all flood cars is going to be the engine. If the driver managed to turn it off before it went into the canal it might be salvageable. That doesn’t appear likely but we can certainly hope.

As we’ve noted before, overtaking is something that should only be done when it’s truly safe. This is far from the first time that we’ve seen an overtake attempt end in complete disaster. At least this time it didn’t end with a car in two completely separate pieces.
