Tesla’s electric vehicles tend to be well-received, though some of their tech-forward features, like their steering wheel-based turn signals, have attracted a lot of criticism over the years. This was one of the reasons why a Norway-based driving school has opted to design a workaround for Tesla’s controversial turn signals — and it has paid off well so far.
Norway-based driving school Elite Trafikkskole AS has a number of Teslas in its fleet, and while its previous vehicles, like the Model Y, use traditional turn signals, its new Model 3 had turn signals on its steering wheel. Jon Kjetil Kallekodt, the daily manager of Elite Trafikkskole, noted that the school was not very happy with the touch-based turn signals on the new Model 3’s steering wheel.
The school acquired a third-party turn signal lever that can be retrofitted on the new Model 3, and it also tried installing programmable, wireless buttons to the back of the steering wheel to operate the turn signals. The programmable wireless buttons have worked out very well so far, as noted in a Tek.no report. “We have bought a regular turn signal lever that can be retrofitted, but so far, we have had very positive experiences with these buttons,” Kallekodt noted.
With the wireless buttons on the back of the reengineered Model 3’s steering wheel, the school’s students could easily engage them when needed. Kallekodt stated that the placement of the steering wheel buttons actually worked well since they are easy to reach when students are holding the steering wheel properly.
“We are used to the turn signal lever being on the back of the steering wheel. So then it became quite natural to place these programmable buttons on the back as well. When we teach the students the correct grip on the steering wheel, (they) will easily reach these buttons,” Kallekodt said.
The school’s solution seems to be working out in real-world tests, so much so that Elite Trafikkskole has now equipped the wireless buttons even in its Model Y and older Model 3 units, which still have physical gear stalks. As announced by Elite Trafikkskole on its official Facebook page, one of its students, 19-year-old Nathalie Einarsen-Evensen, has also passed her driving test in a reengineered Model 3.
