An always-on dashcam setup not only caught the accident while the owner was away, but managed to capture the offending car’s plate number too

Dashcams can cost hundreds of dollars but in this case, one saved an Audi S7 owner thousands. While he was away someone backed into his car and fled the scene. Once he reviewed the footage he found the teen driver responsible and learned that the repairs would cost almost $10,000.
According to the poster, PhairPhair on Reddit, the incident itself happened on August 25, 2023. In the short dashcam video, we can see a white Nissan Versa backing up and then into the camera car. What isn’t visible from that angle is what type of car the camera vehicle is and how bad the damage was after the impact.
That’s where additional information from PhairPhair comes in. They say that the car is a 2016 Audi S7 and that he gave this video to the local police after noticing the damage. The authorities then contacted the owner of the vehicle who happened to be the father of the female Nissan driver.

He initially wanted to settle the case without insurance companies but changed his tune when informed that the bill “was almost $10k.” According to the poster, the headlight assembly alone costs $4,400. Through a quick search, we can confirm that these lights on the used market cost north of $1,000 with some that are double that.
None of this would’ve gone down this way though without the dashcam in place. According to PhairPhair, it’s linked to his OBDII reader so that it can constantly record and then save a file should there be an impact.
That appears to be exactly how it worked out in this case. Notably, PhairPhair points out that had the fender bender been in the back, he wouldn’t have been so lucky as there’s no camera pointed that way. For those of you out there worried about damage like this, it’s worth having a camera pointed in each primary direction.
