Tesla to launch Supercharger access for VW owners later this year

Tesla’s Supercharger network is now set to open to its latest non-Tesla electric vehicle (EV) brand, with Volkswagen now slated to gain access in the coming months.

Although Tesla Superchargers will technically open to Volkswagen’s vehicles in March, the company doesn’t expect to start shipping NACS adapters to owners until June or July, according to a statement from the company’s head spokesperson.

“We get access to the network in June/July, when we have an official VW adapter,” said Mark Gillies, Volkswagen Group of America’s Director of Public Relations, in a statement to PCMag at CES in Las Vegas.

So far, Tesla has opened its Supercharger network to EVs from Ford, Rivian, General Motors (GM), Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan, and Mercedes-Benz is expected to be the next company in line ahead of Volkswagen. The news also comes after it was widely speculated that Volkswagen could be one of the last automakers to adopt access, due to it being one of the last to adopt the NACS charging hardware and owning its own charging network with Electrify America.

You can see more details from Tesla on its plans to expand Supercharger access on its website here, though it does not yet list Volkswagen as “coming soon” at the time of writing. It’s also not yet clear when vehicles from Volkswagen-owned brands Audi, Porsche, and new company Scout will gain access, though the news comes just a month after the automaker launched the ID.Buzz in the U.S. market.

Last year, Rivian and Volkswagen announced plans for a joint venture with a $5 billion investment into the startup from the Germany-based automaker. The companies are expected to partner on both a software platform and on developing EVs together, though Tesla CEO Elon Musk has recently expressed skepticism about how the companies will fund their plans.
