Vigilante 4×4 shoves a Viper V-10 into a 1979 Jeep Cherokee

Vigilante 4×4 is a company that has built up a reputation for building classic Jeeps that retain their original looks but boast modern mechanicals, including powertrains with outputs ranging up to 1,000 hp.

The 1979 Jeep Cherokee S shown here is what the Texas company can deliver when fully unleashed. It features a Viper V-10, but not a stock example. Rather, it’s a tuned example built by Michigan’s Prefix, an expert at lifting performance on the Viper.

The engine’s displacement has been increased to 9.0 liters (550 cubic inches) and according to Vigilante, it delivers 825 hp in this application. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and a four-wheel-drive system with an Atlas-II transfer case and Dana axles at both ends.

Vigilante also installed brakes with six-piston calipers to ensure the SUV can stop as good as it goes, and to deliver optimal handling and comfort, the company installed 4-link Eibach coil suspension combined with Fox Racing shocks. Other performance upgrades include a stainless steel exhaust system with a Borla muffler.

For the exterior, Vigilante went with a Frosted Glass Blue & Stratus White two-tone paint scheme. Inside, a combination of denim and leather trim has been selected. The seats are all original but have been given a full restoration, including a powder coating process, along with the installation of new springs, foam, and padding. Modern touches include the climate control system, as well as an audio system that resembles the original radio but features Bluetooth connectivity.

Vigilante builds start at $295,000 and the prices can vary dramatically depending on the chosen specification. The build process starts with sandblasting the original body, and then rebuilding it, using original parts or in some cases new parts made to look like the originals. For the chassis, Vigilante uses its own design developed using 3D scans of original bodies to ensure proper mounting. A custom wiring harness is also installed, to ensure all the modern features integrate seamlessly.
