The E90/E92 generation of the BMW M3 is one of the finest cars ever built by the M division but sadly, there is now one less example on the roads after this car suffered a catastrophic engine issue while being driven at high speed.
Video of the carnage appears to have been filmed somewhere in Europe and shows the silver M3 approaching an underpass at high speed. Suddenly, blue smoke starts to pour out from the engine bay and the exhaust and the driver is forced to pull into the slow lane. The passenger in the BMW also captured the moment on video and as soon as the runs into problems, a large warning message appears on its infotainment display.

After the spectacular engine failure, the driver managed to pull over and inspect the damage. Oil has been spewed around the engine bay and it’s not a pretty sight. However, the engine may not have been destroyed.
While it’s difficult to determine what exactly has happened without inspecting the engine in person, a number of users on Instagram suggest that it could have blown a rod bearing, perhaps because it had not been changed recently and simply failed under the load of high-speed driving.

If the driver does have to completely replace the engine, doing so won’t be cheap. Driving E90 and E92 versions of the M3 is a 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 known as the S65 that was good for 414 hp at 8,300 rpm and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque at 3,900 rpm when it was new. It is unknown if the owner of this M3 had made any modifications to the engine that could have contributed to the issue or if poor maintenance is to blame.
