The Precision Immobilization Technique is surprisingly effective even against large vehicles like this landscaping truck

The PIT maneuver is a popular technique for ending police pursuits and this video is evidence of why that’s the case. Georgia State Police put it to work skillfully to stop a runaway driver in a huge landscaping truck. Despite the carnage it caused, the driver walked away without any life-threatening injuries.
This video is actually a couple of years old but the dashcam is only now surfacing. On April 25th, 2021, a man allegedly stole an Isuzu NPR landscaping truck and drove toward downtown Atlanta. Police tracked the truck and then attempted to pull it over but the driver didn’t stop.
Officers say that his driving “exhibited dangerous behavior, weaving recklessly between lanes and nearly colliding with several vehicles.” GSP units boxed in the box truck to a degree but he still didn’t slow down. Once the highway was somewhat clear, Trooper Ennis drove into the right rear bumper of the truck causing it to crash.

As the dashcam footage shows, the landscaping truck veers hard right, does a 180-degree turn and almost manages to stay upright. It rolls backward and into a barrier, hops up onto it slightly, pulverizes some of the fencing and as a result, flips onto the passenger side. Troopers in a Dodge Charger approached the vehicle, broke out the windshield, and arrested the driver.
Evidently, the officers first transported him to Grady Hospital where he was medically cleared for transport to jail. This certainly isn’t the first time we’ve covered the PIT maneuver here but it stands out as perhaps the largest vehicle we’ve ever seen immobilized with the technique. On the other end of the spectrum, it’s also used against motorcycles from time to time.
